A colleague at work sent me the following - not very PC but quite thought provoking.

I post with no further comment:

JFK'S Secretary of State, Dean Rusk, was in France in the early 60's when DeGaulle decided to pull out of NATO. DeGaulle said he wanted all US military out of France as soon as possible.

Rusk responded "Does that include those who are buried here?"

DeGaulle did not respond.

You could have heard a pin drop

There was a conference in France where a number of international engineers were taking part, including French and American. During a break, one of the French engineers came back into the room saying 'Have you heard the latest dumb stunt Bush has done?
He has sent an aircraft carrier to Indonesia to help the tsunami victims. What does he intended to do, bomb them?'

A Boeing engineer stood up and replied quietly:

'Our carriers have three hospitals on board that can treat several hundred people; they are nuclear powered and can supply emergency electrical power to shore facilities; they have three cafeterias with the capacity to feed 3,000 people three meals a day, they can produce several thousand gallons of fresh water from sea water each day, and they carry half a dozen helicopters for use in transporting victims and injured to and from their flight deck.
We have eleven such ships; how many does France have?'

You could have heard a pin drop.

~~~
A U.S. Navy Admiral was attending a naval conference that included Admirals from the U.S., English, Canadian, Australian and French Navies. At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a large group of Officers that included personnel from most of those countries.
Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks but a French admiral suddenly complained that, whereas Europeans learn many languages, Americans learn only English.
He then asked, 'Why is it that we always have to speak English in these conferences rather than speaking French?'
Without hesitating, the American Admiral replied,
'Maybe it's because the Brit's, Canadians, Aussie's and Americans arranged it so you wouldn't have to speak German.'
You could have heard a pin drop.
Robert Whiting, an elderly gentleman of 83, arrived in Paris by plane. At French Customs, he took a few minutes to locate his passport in his carry on.
"You have been to France before, monsieur?" the customs officer asked.
Mr. Whiting admitted that he had been to France previously.
"Then you should know enough to have your passport ready."
The American said,
'The last time I was here, I didn't have to show it."
"Impossible. Americans always have to show your passports on arrival in France!"
The American senior gave the Frenchman a long hard look. Then he quietly explained,
''Well, when I came ashore at Omaha Beach on D-Day in 1944 to help liberate this country, I couldn't find a single Frenchmen to show a passport to."
You could have heard a pin drop.
The 54th Parliament of the United Kingdom was dissolved today to allow for the General Election on 6th May.
In common with many citizens I couldn't wait for this day to come.
Yes, we need a General Election, yes we need a change of Government but above all else we needed to see the back of the most venal, corrupt and contemptible Parliament of modern times.
The damage caused to our democracy by this Parliament is frightening - the corruption of far too many members has tainted all politicians in the collective conscience of the British people.
I am convinced that there remain many "good guys" in politics and in Parliament, however in the public mind everybody who stands for election is tainted to a greater or lesser extent by the excesses of the 54th Parliament.
The final sordid nail in the coffin, something that is almost beyond parody was today's news that the 3 former Labour MP's charged with corrupt practices have been granted legal aid (at the tax payers expense) to fight their case.
What a final kick in the guts to the British people - something to remember the 2005 - 2010 Parliament for!
A few months ago I quoted Oliver Cromwell, to my mind one of the greatest Englishmen, when, 357 years ago, he also was faced with a corrupt legislature:
You are no Parliament, I say you are no Parliament, I will put an end to your sitting.
You have been sat too long here for any good you have been doing.
Depart, I say, and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go!”
Well, they have gone - let's hope the 55th Parliament of the United Kingdom is a damn sight better than the last one.
Rosedale Conservatives have commenced delivery of Councillor David Lewis's 2010 Election Address.
Rosedale_2010_Election Address
David has been a Rosedale Councillor since 2005 when he won a by-election and he was re-elected in 2006.
David has worked extremely hard over the last 5 years both as a representative of Rosedale's residents and, more recently, as Chairman of the Borough Councils Finance & Personnel Committee.
David, working alongside fellow Rosedale Councillor Dee Hart, Hertfordshire County Councillor Christine Mitchell and with our MP Charles Walker, has really helped make Rosedale a better place for the residents to live
Judi & myself are delighted to be able to support David in his election campaign and we wish him every success on May 6th.
