St George Cross

Interesting article on wiki - I didn't realise just how many other nations have St George as their patron saint.

Councillor Mark Mills-Bishop, the Mayor-Elect of Broxbourne, has recently launched a new blog.

Mark is seeking re-election on 6th May for his second term as a Borough Councillor for Goffs Oak Ward.

On Tuesday night, at the full Council meeting, all members united to pay tribute to 4 Councillors who are standing down from public office at the next local election.

Councillors Mrs Joyce Ball, Mrs Moyra O'Neill, Mrs Kay Leese and Alan Smith have decided to take a well earned rest from local politics after clocking up over 80 years of service to the Borough.

Joyce Ball has continuously served on Broxbourne Council and it's predecessor, Hoddesdon Urban District Council, since 1968 meaning she has completed a remarkable 42 years service as a Councillor.

By any mark this is an incredible achievement and Judi and myself wish Joyce a long and well deserved retirement.

Moyra O'Neill has served as both a District and County Councillor being first eelcted to the Borough Council in 1987.

Kay Leese, a colleague in Cheshunt North Ward, has served as a councillor since 1999 and finally Alan Smith has served since 2001.

All 4 of these colleagues have served the residents of Broxbourne and the Conservative Party, both nationally and locally, with distinction and it seems appropriate to offer our sincere thanks and best wishes for the future.

Never let it be said that Broxbourne's Conservatives are less than a hardy, dedicated bunch..................

For the second year running our friend and fellow activist James has literally given blood for the cause.

Last year James had a miserable experience when delivering leaflets in Cheshunt Central Ward when he was bitten by a dog.

Today James cracked his head on a low hanging lintel - again whilst delivering in Cheshunt Central.

This time the damage was a gash in the head and several stitches.

James was patched up in record time at the excellent Urgent Care Centre in Cheshunt and we hope that he is none the worse for the experience.

I wonder if we should instigate a Tory Party version of the Purple Heart for activists damaged in the line of duty - if so James would now have a purple heart & bar!

..........is the title of a chapter in the Tory Party Manifesto.

Lots of interesting proposals in there but the one that really caught my eye is on page 75.

"We will give residents the power to instigate local referendums on any local issue if 5% of the local population sign up"

What an excellent idea.

In a Borough of Broxbourne context I can't help but contemplate the implications of this for the people protesting against the closure of Hoddesdon Open Air Pool.

I guess the electorate of Broxbourne is about 65,000 people - I recall that the pool protesters recently submitted a petition with 7,500 names on it to the Council.

Even allowing for the element of "out of area" signatures on the petition I would suggest that more than 5% of local residents have signed. (Although whether or not they are all registered on the electoral role is a consideration)

This would suggest that if the proposed Tory plans were in place, then there would have to be a referendum in the Borough on the HOAP closure.

This would, to say the least, be quite an interesting situation and serves to illustrate, using a relevant local example, of how the Conservative Party proposals will help return power to the people.
