Driving to a Cheshunt North canvas session this evening I heard part of a radio interview with a lady called Jean Lambert who apparently is a Green Party MEP for London.

She was talking about immigration and came out with a fantastic line:

According to Jean we shouldn't talk about illegal immigrants, they are alternative migrants..................

Talk about calling a spade an earth inverting instrument!

Sometimes it is curious to see how the local press interprets things.

In this weeks Mercury there is an item headed "Councillors urged to be school governors" that covers a problem Broxbourne Council has with filling 3 school governor posts for which it holds "nomination rights".

Now, it is important to understand that this means the Council can nominate any borough resident to these posts - they are not reserved for Borough councillors.

However, reading the story one gets the impression that these are posts that Borough Councillors should fill.

The journalist has interpreted Moyra O'Neill's speech at last weeks full Council as saying that councillors should fill these roles - the expression used is that Councillors should "step up to the plate"

My interpretation is that Moyra said it was regrettable that the roles couldn't be filled and that being a school governor was very rewarding.

She certainly didn't say that her colleagues on the council should "step up to the plate" - I thought she was saying that Borough residents should consider putting themselves forward.

I think if the Mercury asked local councillors about being school governors they may be surprised to find how many already are already doing this.

There is no doubt that there is a huge national problem with finding candidates who are willing to take up the challenge of being school governors - it isn't just a local problem.

The Broxbourne vacancies have been around a lot longer than the period mentioned in The Mercury & unfortunately nobody from the local community has come forward to offer their services.

For the record, Judi & myself have been governors at Fairfields School in Rosedale since January 2008 and have just become governors at Arlesdene Nursery School & Childrens Centre in Cheshunt Central.

When Judi & myself were elected to Broxbourne council in 2008 we thought it important to be totally transparent on how much we cost local taxpayers.

Therefore when we started this website we decided to publish details of all payments we received as Borough Councillors, you may link to this page by clicking here.

At full council last Tuesday there were a number of exchanges concerning possible irregular payments of council allowances.

From what we understand this concerns "attendence payments" made to councillors for attending official training events and for sitting on the Licencing Sub Committee.

It seems that under current regulations such attendence payments should not have been made.

It is noteworthy that the Independent Remuneration Panel had ceased payments for training events etc from financial year 2009 - 2010.

Apparently these payments have been made for some time - the Leader of the Council stated at the meeting that the total sum involved was about £17,000.

The whole issue is still awaiting resolution and, we understand, requires further guidance from the District Auditor.

Judi & myself have a very clear position on this.

In our first year as councillors we were each paid £300, which was subject to income tax & NI, for attending 12 council training events.

If it is determined that these payments were "irregular"  then we will repay the money to the Council.

Clearly we don't know the final decision / outcome on this matter, however we thought it important to explain to people we represent our position.

A last minute reminder that tomorrow morning thousands of people will be running in London for a huge number of individual charities.

We have previously flagged that Jason Brimson is running in support of Hertfordshire Air Ambulance and Nicky Hewitt in support of Sue Ryder Charity.

Good luck to Jason, Nicky and everybody else running tomorrow - we hope that the weather is kind, the blisters aren't too painful and that you all raise lots of money for your chosen charity.
