July 20th 2009 is rapidly becoming quite memorable for its anniversaries.

40 years since the first moon landing and now England have defeated the Australians in a Lords Test Match for the first time in 75 years.

Well done to Andrew Strauss and his team - now on to Edgbaston in 10 days time.

It's incredible to think that 40 years have passed since Armstrong & Aldrin were the first human beings to set foot on the moon.

I am just old enough to remember the Apollo missions, although it was probably the BBC coverage (with James Burke, Patrick Moore and Raymond Baxter) of the later ones that I can recall.

Apollo missions to the moon ended in 1972 and it does feel like we have been "marking time" in our exploration of space since then although it now looks as if China, India and the USA are again planning lunar visits.

There have been remarkable technological advances in many areas in the last 40 years but I can't help but think we have almost gone backwards in the area of aerospace.

Nothing has improved on the mighty Saturn V rocket that propelled the astronauts to the moon and of course we can no longer fly the Atlantic in less than 3 hours on Concorde.

Here are some amazing images from Apollo 11 - I wonder how long it will be before there are some new pictures of "man on the moon"?

There was an excellent item on Iain Dale's blog yesterday about this issue.

Well worth looking at, as it was clearly contributed by a well informed source - quite illuminating to say the least.

I was part of a small team (8) of Broxbourne Conservatives that spent a few hours in Norwich today delivering some leaflets on behalf of Chloe Smith.

A very pleasant day, albeit with slightly dodgy weather, with good company and an excellent full English breakfast at "Dixies Cafe".

I did however get the sense that the good folks of Norwich had been "campaigned to death".

My favourite sight of the day was a recycling bin next to a front door that had a carefully printed sign on it asking that political leaflets be placed directly inside!

More evidence of the nanny state.

Dame Deirdre Hutton, the outgoing head of a quango called the Food Standards Agency has called for flapjacks to be banned from supermarkets.

Apparently the high fat content in a flapjack poses a serious risk to our health and is a cause of obesity!!

Well Dame Deirdre, as an adult I am perfectly capable of deciding what I eat without your "help", I can make an informed choice and I don't want to see foods banned because they don't fit into your view of the world...........

Perhaps what should be banned are expensive pointless quangos and the interfering busybodies that work for them!!

If an incoming Conservative Government does nothing else it would have served the nation well by abolishing as many quangos as possible and as soon as possible.
