Why is it that after an election defeat that the spokesmen for the losing party are incapable of being honest and admit that their side was thrashed.

After today's crushing defeat in Norwich North, New Labour has put forward various front benchers to try to put a positive spin on the result.

Not only do these politicians look foolish by presenting increasingly bizarre reasons for their defeat but they also demonstrate how the political elite look on the electorate with contempt – do they really think we are stupid enough to believe some of the rubbish they come out with?

Harriet Harman has just sunk to a new low on Sky News by claiming that the “arrogant Tories are already claiming the keys to number 10”.

I haven't seen or heard any Tory doing any such thing.

Ms Harman's approach seems to be to issue unfounded, unattributable smears against her political opponents – this is surely a sign that New Labour is in serious trouble when their Deputy Leader resorts to the worst sort of political spin.

Conservative victory just announced on the BBC - about a 7,000 majority.

Another depressing set of economic figures published today which show the economy continuing to contract at 0.8% between April and June.

This is more than twice as bad as the 0.3% being predicted by economists and strongly suggests that the treasury will fail to meet it's own economic forecasts and therefore fail to "balance the books".

Again, this seems to show that Chancellor Darling's last budget predictions were, at best, optimistic and at worst a fantasy of nightmarish proportions.

Looks like the recessions is going to be longer and deeper than was anticipated.

There is a report today that the RAF intends to use a Chinook helicopter to display at air shows over the Summer months.

Given the ongoing debate about helicopter shortages in Afghanistan you have to ask what on earth is the MOD playing at?

The MOD has apparently stated that “public relations remain an important priority for the armed services”

Doesn't this just about sum up so many of the things wrong with our society where some Civil Service clown has decided that PR is more important than properly supporting our fighting men & women!

It's good to see that Cadbury's Dairy Milk will soon carry the Fairtrade logo – I think this is the first “mainstream” confectionary brand to achieve Fairtrade status.

This ensures that the farmers in Ghana who produce the cocoa are paid a guaranteed minimum price for their produce as well as an additional premium to help develop infrastructure in their communities.

Apparently the price of Dairy Milk won't increase, with Cadbury's absorbing the increased charges associated with Fairtrade status themselves.

It feels morally right that steps are taken to ensure that farmers in what used to be called “third world” countries are paid a fair price for their goods and Cadbury's should be applauded for taking this step
