This years Tour de France captured my interest

The final stage was won by British rider Mark Cavendish - his 6th stage victory in this years race & the first time a Brit has ever won the final stage of the race.

Watch & enjoy.

Andrew MacKinlay has published the following short film on You Tube explaining why he is standing down from parliament - makes quite interesting viewing.

In yet another well thought out move, the New Labour Government has found an ingenious way to boost the morale of our soldiers in the front line in Afghanistan.

Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth has launched a legal challenge in the Court of Appeal to slash compensation payments to 2 soldiers injured in the line of duty.

What a great message this is to send to our armed forces - put yourself in harms way for your country, suffer a wound or injury and the State will do everything in it's power to make sure you don't get adequate compensation for what may be a life changing event

It is unbelievable that a Government could make such a crass and insensitive move at a time when our armed forces are suffering such high casualties.

New Labour has made great play about future “Tory Cuts” if there is a change of government next year.

Well at least we now know where the New Labour is trying to save money – at the expense of our wounded servicemen and women.

I will be sorry to see Andrew MacKinlay, the socialist MP for Thurrock, leave the House of Commons.

Self evidently, I would agree with very few (if any) of Mr MacKinlays core beliefs but Parliament needs free spirited and principled back bench MP’s such as Mr MacKinlay.

I doubt that few in the New Labour hierarchy will be sorry to see his departure – after all he is one of the “awkward squad” of MP’s who can’t be brow beaten by the party whips and has the courage to stand by his beliefs.

Recently Mr MacKinlay was one of only 10 New Labour MP’s who voted against the Government in the US – UK Extradition Treaty debate.

If reports are to be believed it was the craven behaviour of 59 of his parliamentary colleagues on this issue which has brought his decision to leave parliament into the public domain.

I wish Mr MacKinlay a long and happy retirement.

Mark Cavendish won another stage in the Tour De France yesterday - his 5th in this year's event and fulfilling my expectations of him.

He has now won 9 stages in the last 2 "Tours" which beats the British record previously held by Barry Hoban.

Hoban gained his victories between 1967 and 1975 - for Cavendish to exceed this in just 2 years is a remarkable achievement.

Cavendish is now aiming for a victory in the final, high profile stage in Paris tomorrow - I certainly wouldn't bet against him doing this.

It would be remiss not to pay tribute to Bradley Wiggins who still has hopes of an overall podium finish in the race.

In many ways Wiggins has achieved more than Cavendish by consistently recording strong finishing positions in stage after stage - but of course without gaining a headline grabbing stage victory.

For there to be 2 successful British competitors in the Tour de France is a reflection of the exceptional progress made in British cycling in recent years.
