I don't normally comment on opinion polls but this caught my eye this morning.

Just a couple of observations.

(1) If New Labour voters are seriously contemplating Mandelson as a replacement for Brown what does that say about the available talent at the top of the party?

(2) The comment that Mandelson has "had a successful week running the country" - if this was a good week then what for heavens sake would constitute a bad one?

Judi & I were privileged to attend the local Burma Star Association's VJ day commemoration earlier today.

It is 64 years ago that the Second World War ended with the surrender of the Japanese Empire on 15th August 1945.

The memorial to the Broxbourne residents who hold the Burma Star is in a tranquil corner of the Cheshunt Almshouse's garden.

Today's moving ceremony was attended by a small number of veterans their friends & family, local residents and elected members of the council, led by Mayor Lyn White and Council Leader Ken Ayling.

I would like to pay particular tribute to Peter Trigg who is at the forefront of organising this and other events that commemorate the men & women of the Borough of Broxbourne who served their country in World War 2.

Sadly, Peter was taken ill at the end of the ceremony.

Judi and I would like to extend our very best wishes to Peter and his family and hope for his speedy and complete recovery.

Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise became the best loved comedy entertainers in Britain in the 1960's and 70's. This brilliant routine shows why.

I note that Lord Mandelson has decided to publish the independent report on the collapse of MG Rover on September 11th**.

This news came after the Serious Fraud Office announced that it wasn't going to instigate a criminal investigation into the affair.

This is probably a cause of annoyance for Mandelson who clearly hoped to delay publication of the report until after the next election.

This makes me wonder if there is something more shocking in the report than criticism of the government for propping up a failing business in an area with marginal constituencies in it (shock – horror!!).

**As a slightly mischievous aside, I seem to remember the New Labour has some previous form for using this particular date as a good one to “bury bad news”.

I wonder how close Alan Duncan is to spending a spell on the Tory backbenches?

Following his implication in the expenses scandal (£4k repaid?), his ill judges comments on HIGNFY and now his indiscreet and offensive comments about “MP’s living on rations” I suspect he is currently on very thin ice.

Will there be a new Shadow Leader of the House in post before long?
