Edward Woodward, who passed away today, starred in one of my favourite films.

Breaker Morant was a low budget Australian film that told the story of the trial and execution of 2 Australian soldiers in the Boer War.

Breaker Morant

It is a well observed movie that highlights the brutality of a now almost forgotten (at least in Britain) Imperial war and the hypocrisy and incompetence of the British General Staff of the time.

With Woodward’s passing I am sure that it will be shown on TV again – look out for it and enjoy Woodward’s (and the excellent supporting casts) acting.

I haven't really had the time to blog for the last week or so.

I am extremely busy at work and just haven't been able to summon up the enthusiasm to sit in front of the laptop in the evening.

Hope to have some free time tomorrow and I'm sure there is plenty to comment on.................

One piece of news I have just heard on the radio, whilst typing this, is that Liz Truss has been confirmed as the Tory PCC for SW Norfolk.

I am quite pleased about this.

Although I have some concerns about the way Central Office tries to impose candidates on local associations, I really don't like the way that her opponents dragged up 4 year old details of her personal lfe in an attempt to remove her from the candidature.

I understand the vote was something like 3 - 1 in her favour.

Hopefully this side show will soon be forgotten and SW Norfolk Conservatives will unite behind Ms Truss.

Why does London Underground insist on bombarding it's customers with irritating public address system announcements?

Most days I commute into London using the First Capital Connect train from Cuffley and use Old Street Station - which FCC shares with the Northern Line.

Hardly a day passes when at some point between leaving the train and passing through the barriers a pre-recorded message is played over the PA system to tell me that:

"The Northern Line is working normally"

or perhaps

"All London Underground lines are working normally"

or by way of variation

"There are no delays on the Northern Line".

I don't need to know this!

Like most passengers my "default position" is to presume that the railway is operating normally & without delays - I only need to be advised if this isn't the case!

Why does LU think it is necessary to tell its customers that it is successfully managing its operation and providing the service that the customers have paid for?

Is the LU service so bad that its management feel that they have to make a public announcement when they manage to run their railway properly?

I am probably just being a grumpy old man but I just don't understand the need for these endless announcements.

This year I am wearing a remembrance poppy with a difference.

A colleague at work is involved with the Spondon Branch of the Royal British Legion who have produced enamel lapel pins of the Derbyshire County Flag combined with the poppy image.

2009 Derbyshire Poppy Day Pin

I think this is an excellent idea and I understand that the badge has sold in great numbers and has raised a considerable amount of money.

I was brought up just a few miles away from Spondon (although just on the Nottinghamshire side of the County Boundary)

It somehow makes remembrance day slightly more personal to wear a poppy with a "regional identity" and it specifically makes me think of the men of my local regiment - The Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment) who served our country in the conflicts of the last century.

I wonder if any of the Hertfordshire branches of the Royal British Legion would be able to produce a similar badge using the recently adopted Hertfordshire County Flag? If so I am sure it would be hugely popular.

Whilst on the subject of local democracy, James Burdett has recently published a thought provoking item on his website which is well worth a read.

I found his thoughts about the Scrutiny Committee and the size of the elected membership of the Council of particular interest.

I have previously commented on how over represented we are at Westminster and have to say that I don’t disagree with too many of the principles that James raises
