I disagreed with Michael Foot on virtually every major policy he advocated but I respected him as one of 20th Century's great Parliamentarians.

A man of great principle, an interesting orator, a considerable intellect and a credit to the Labour Party but a bl**dy awful Leader complicit in Labours greatest post war General Election defeat.

I don't feel any particular sadness in Mr Foots demise - after a long and fulfilling life it could be argued that his various achievements should be celebrated rather than mourned - but I can't help but think that the timing of his death has given his party one last great service.

After all, his passing will take Harriet Harman's car crash performance at PMQ's off all of the front pages of tomorrow's newspapers?

Prescience or what?

Yesterday I commented on Alan Johnson's ability to engage mouth before brain and almost on cue he shot off his mouth about the John Venables recall to gaol.

Within minutes of Mr Johnson promising that the public had "a right to know all of the facts", The Ministry of Justice backtracked, effectively saying that no information on Venables return to gaol would be released.

Another great call by Alan "man of the people" Johnson

Harman and Johnson - today was a real win double for New Labour..................

PMQ's today was a reminder of William Hagues' ability as a front bench politician.

In David Cameron and Gordon Browns' absence from PMQ's (apparently Brown thought it important to see a nonentity called Zuma from South Africa), Mr Hague and Ms Harman deputised.

I have rarely, if ever, seen a more inept parliamentary performance than Harman's today.

Hague was on top form, refreshing memories of how he frequently bested Tony Blair.

Harman was embarrassing - even I started (briefly) to feel sorry for her as she stumbled from one shambolic answer to another.

Even Squeaker Bercow stuck the boot into her as she tried to deflect attention onto Lord Ashcroft in virtually every answer to members' questions.

If Harman is the second best New Labour have to offer.................

Alan Johnson is rapidly becoming my least favourite New Labour Minister (quite a feat considering the competition!).

Apart from his outrageous stance on the Gary McKinnon case his latest "words of wisdom" are so stupefyingly stupid as to be almost beyond belief.

To call Lord Ashcroft "unpatriotic" because of his taxation status is simply outrageous.

Is Johnson ignorant of the £10 million that "non dom" donors have contributed to the New Labour in recent years?

Perhaps he thinks they are all "unpatriotic" as well (New Labours treasurer must love that) or is it yet another case of a minister engaging his mouth before his brain?

Some people may be taken in by Johnson's "man of the people " act, however having seen him give a seriously unpleasant speech in his role as a union leader (many years ago) I have never been in any doubt that he is a thoroughly dangerous and dislikeable political animal.
